Every once in a while I will consolidate things and save my thoughts for you to look back on - maybe each Quarter (Spring, Summer, Autumn,Winter) If you want further details/advice on any subject touched on in our Blog, feel free to eMail or ring John or Sandra (PC Senior) at any time

28/03/22 Back from Holiday

Back from a weeks holiday in Italy and just pondering on how I used my Computing/Technology skills while I was away in a foreign country? First of all, I took with me my iPhone and my Laptop as we have a Broadband Connection when we get there. No problem putting them through the X-Ray machines at the airport - don’t worry, it won’t destroy your data or cause any corruption! Still worth taking even if you don’t have your own Broadband whilst abroad as there are lots of places you can Logon to someone elses (At the airport, in many cafes, a friend’s house etc - one town near us provides an area in the local park for public use!) My nice “Lumix” Digital Camera is broken and not worth having repaired at the moment, so nowadays I use the Camera on my Mobile Phone for Holiday Snaps and Download them onto my Laptop when I get home. There are just a few situations when you may wish you had a proper camera but not many unless Photography is your passionate Hobby of course! If you use/watch BBC iPlayer on your Laptop - will it work while you are abroad? In general, the answer is NO they don’t allow it and it will be blocked BUT what did work for me in Italy were the Films/Documentaries which I had downloaded in BBC iPlayer onto my Laptop - you just need to install the iPlayer Download Program onto your computer and spend time before you go Downloading a few things - takes a while but worth it when you get there. Ring John or Sandra (PC Senior) if you need help/advice with this! Communicate with your foreign Plumber or Shopkeeper Actually, we are not too bad speaking a bit of Italian to communicate in shops and supermarkets BUT it is not quite as easy to get through to an Italian plumber exactly what you want (or don’t like). That’s the beauty of having a Smartphone which can use the Internet. Before you go abroad, Download the “Google Translate” App and have a practice …. watching Sandra use it is amazing! As she types in a sentence in English, it translates it into Italian and she then points it in their direction for them to read. Tip: When you point it at them, if you turn the phone sideways, it will rotate the screen into Landscape Mode and the text will be large enough for them to read without putting their glasses on! (Try it out and see)
